Dispute the specific reporting error

CFPB guidance says consumers have the right to dispute inaccurate or incomplete information in a credit report. A useful dispute identifies the exact account or data point, explains what is wrong and includes copies of records that support the correction.

Address both reporting layers when appropriate

CFPB recommends disputing inaccurate information with the credit reporting company and also with the company that furnished the information. Those can be different organizations, and a debt-validation request to a third-party collector is a separate process.
