State-by-state move-in evidence

Move-In Inspection & Condition Checklist Rules by State

Move-in documentation can determine how easy it is to separate pre-existing wear from later tenant-caused damage. Some states require or specifically regulate an inventory, condition statement or inspection process. This directory includes only states where RentBillCheck has a dedicated verified move-in condition topic.

Why move-in evidence matters later

A move-in inventory, statement of condition or signed checklist creates a dated baseline. If a later move-out charge is for carpet, paint, appliances, blinds or other physical condition, the starting record can be just as important as the move-out photos.

Build your own condition record even when the state has a form

  • Photograph every room before unpacking.
  • Capture close-ups of stains, scratches, chips, wall marks and appliance defects.
  • Save the signed inventory or condition statement.
  • Submit written corrections within any applicable state or lease period.
  • Keep maintenance requests that document defects during the tenancy.
Educational information only. A state rule, company charge sheet or invoice does not by itself decide an individual dispute. The exact lease, condition, dates, evidence and local rules can change the result.
