State-by-state deposit documentation

Security Deposit Itemization & Receipts by State

A deduction statement can be governed by more than a return deadline. Some states have dedicated rules for itemization, receipts, invoices, estimates, damage lists or supporting documents. This directory includes only jurisdictions where RentBillCheck has a specific verified documentation topic.

Why this is not a 50-page template

Only states with a dedicated source-verified topic appear below. If a state does not add an exact rule for this issue, use the broader state source layer instead of a thin page that repeats generic advice.

A deadline and an itemization rule are different questions

A landlord can meet a return deadline but still raise a separate documentation question if the state requires a particular itemized statement, receipt, invoice, estimate or damage list. Review both the timing and the contents of the accounting.

Build the comparison packet

  • Deposit accounting or withholding statement.
  • Envelope, email or portal timestamp.
  • Receipts, invoices, estimates and work orders.
  • Move-in and move-out photos or inspection records.
  • Written requests for supporting documents and proof of delivery.
Educational information only. A state rule, company charge sheet or invoice does not by itself decide an individual dispute. The exact lease, condition, dates, evidence and local rules can change the result.
